Shortly after I began building simple pine caskets, a friend asked me to make an urn for her husband’s ashes. This certainly complimented my casket business and from that time on, I have been on the lookout for unique and attractive woods to create beautiful urns. My objective has been to use non precious woods that normally would be relegated to the trash heap. Often overlooked are what some folks call defects, I prefer to call character. Much like that of the person whom the urns contain.
I have a variety of wood urns created from white oak, red oak, hickory, slightly spalled elm, northern white cedar, cherry, poplar, juniper, and more. The insect riddled white oak urns have great appeal to those who see it. Most of my urns are created from a single board, so one can follow the grain seamlessly around three of the mitered corners. Smooth and trimless, they are sized so that two urns will fit neatly into the niches that many churches, cemeteries, and funeral homes now provide. At three hundred cubic inches of space, they will contain the ashes of nearly anyone, and often of two if so desired. Personalize as you wish! And, you can provide your own wood for the urn as well. Size required is 4'x8".
I have a few heritage urns created from door and window jambs of the old Central High School in Alexandria. I have left much of the old crazed varnish and paint on as well as hinge mortises and screw holes. If you were on staff of school district 206, I will give this to you at no charge. Thanks for being my teacher! (I have a limited supply.)
Urns - $225 or $425 for two.
